NAGS FAMIARIZATION VISIT TO GBARAMATU MONARCH.
The body of executives of the National Association of Gbaramatu Students, NAGS, has listed the building of a secretariat at Oporoza, the headquarters of Gbaramatu Kingdom in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State, as among the agendas of the student union body.
NAGS executives made the disclosure through its president, Comr. Simon Douye, during a familiarization visit to His Royal Majesty, Oboro Gbaraun II (JP), Aketekpe, Agadagba, the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom in his traditional palace on Sunday, June 4, 2023.
According to the NAGS President, the secretariat when finally built, will aid the student union body to hold its Congress as well as "serve as a means to inspire students to further their education and participate in educational activities in the kingdom" among others.
Speaking further on other initiatives by the newly elected NAGS leadership, Comr. Douye revealed that they intend to utilize "the Society of Petroluem Engineers (SPE) program aimed at creating awareness for students on the importance of engineering to society" and the "continuation of the NAGS mentorship program that was kick-started by the former executives" that was led by Comr. Doubra Timiyan.
Receiving the student body on behalf of His Majesty, Chief Julius Tonfawei, the Perediwei, counseled the new executives to make it a norm to keep mentoring Gbaramatu students for more awareness on the importance of education.
Earlier, Comr. Raphael Ubebe, the immediate-past secretary of NAGS, highlighted some key programmes that were carried out by their administration to include the renovation of the Niger Delta friendly library at Oporoza, the launching of the NAGS mentorship program first held in Kokodiagbene community that was aimed at creating a platform for students to be mentored and educated on the need to embrace education.
HRM Oboro Gbaraun II (JP) commended the student body for their contributions to the educational growth of Gbaramatu Kingdom, and also applauded the past executives of NAGS for their achievements, just as His Majesty advised the new executives to continue from where their predecessors stopped.
On the secretariat, His Majesty assured the student body of the kingdom's commitment on the realization of the project, and advised that, for easy implementation of the NAGS secretariat project, Chief (Arch.) Piniki Azaiye, a board of trustee member of the Gbaramatu Chevron Host Communities' Development Trust (GCHCDT) under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), should be engaged, to which Chief. Azaiye affirmed his full commitment with the promise that the NAGS secretariat project will be added to the PIA budget.
Among the former members of NAGS as well as others present during the visit are: Comr. Moses Uruemu, Treasurer; Comr. Ubebe Denyefa, Sport Director (also the information officer of IYC Gbaramatu chapter); Comr. Simon Timiedi, eleco chairperson; Comr. Tonfawei Tamarakuro, an exco of IYC; and Comr. Sonia Afiyagba, Vice President of the National Union of Izon-Ibe Student, NUIS
