About Gbaramatu Kingdom
Gbaramatu Kingdom—often referred to as the "Commonwealth of the Islands of Gbaramatu"—is a prominent coastal realm of the Ijaw people located in the Warri South-West Local Government Area of Delta State. The kingdom is widely recognized for its profound history, cultural heritage, and strategic socio-economic significance.
Comprising nine major island hubs and numerous surrounding settlements along the Escravos River estuary, Gbaramatu Kingdom hosts vital maritime and economic infrastructure. Notably, it serves as the host community to the Nigerian Maritime University (NMU), Okerenkoko, alongside major national oil and gas installations.
The traditional monarchy is led by the Pere. His Royal Majesty, Pere Williams N. Ogoba, Oboro Gbaraun II (Aketekpe, Agadagba), was crowned in 2016 and reigns as the 26th Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom.
